Escaping Victimhood has been operating since 2007, providing residential workshop programmes for those still suffering the traumatic effects of serious crime sometime after any court process (if applicable) is completed. At that stage, other organisations have withdrawn support and society expects the victim to ‘get over it’, and when they are not they often suffer isolation, anxiety and depression and all that accompanies that.

We provide programmes that are offence specific for up to 12 people, to meet their individual needs to enable recovery and a more positive future. Recent programmes have been for:-

  • Victims of a serious physical assault
  • Victims of a serious sexual assault and,
  • Victims bereaved through murder/manslaughter/culpable road death.

The programmes are 3 night/4 days followed by a follow up day (non-residential) about 2 months later to check progress and reinforce the material. They are facilitated by experts (trauma psychologists etc.) In their fields and take place in many areas of the country in safe, nurturing surroundings. We are an approved provider to the homicide service and are the only organisation in the country to offer this intensive multifaceted, programme to victims of serious crime. As our name suggests we wish our participants to ‘escape’ their ‘victimhood’ and look forward to a more positive future, the programme is compiled in such a way as to make this possible for the most traumatised.
